Black Eyed Peas Recipe Ingredients

  • Black eyed peas – Make sure your black eyed peas are already soaked when you start this recipe. You can purchased them pre-soaked, or do it yourself.
  • Bacon – The bacon flavor in this recipe isn’t overpowering, but it does at a great extra level of flavor.
  • Onion – You can use pre-chopped frozen onions or cut your own fresh. I like both the flavor and texture added by the onions.
  • Garlic – Fresh garlic or refrigerated minced garlic will work. Fresh garlic tends to be more potent.
  • Mushrooms – I like to cheat and use canned mushrooms or frozen sliced mushrooms for our black eyed peas recipe when we’re in a rush.
  • Beef broth – Homemade beef broth, prepared beef broth, or broth made from bouillon. My favorite bouillon is this one.

Black Eyed Peas for Good Luck

Did you know black eyed peas bring good luck if eaten to celebrate the new year? I hear conflicting tales about whether it’s New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day, but I’m thinking it doesn’t matter, we can just have it both days! Hah.

But really, with this Black Eyed Peas Recipe, you won’t mind at all. I could have it every week and never get tired. So yummy.

Black Eyed Peas on New Year’s Eve

We don’t really do much to celebrate NYE, and generally I’m the only one awake after midnight (usually working – BOO), but it is fun to have a few traditions in place like out Black Eyed Peas Recipe, sparkling cider with dinner and setting off some small fireworks in the driveway.

When it’s nice out we like to invite a few friends over and light a fire in the backyard too, but I’m not making any cool whether bets this year. We’re still hitting mid 80’s in the afternoons.

But don’t worry, we’re getting some firewood and marshmallows just in case!

Are black eyed peas good for you?

Yes! Well, I guess that depends how you cook them. A whole lot of butter and bacon will lessen the nutritional value, but black eyed peas are in the legume family and full of fiber. They can even help moderate blood sugar levels.

I would consider this black eyed peas recipe to be healthy.

What can I put on black eyed peas?

Some folks like them with a little salt and pepper, but we’re partial to bacon and mushrooms. My husband doesn’t even like mushrooms, but he’s a huge fan of this black eyed peas recipe.

Some folks make them southern style and add celery and bacon, but we prefer bacon and mushrooms!

Do you have to soak black eyed peas?

If using dried black eyed peas, you can soak overnight or do a quick soak by bringing them to a boil for two minutes. Alternatively you can purchase presoaked black eyed peas or canned black eyed peas.

My personal preference is to use canned beans or make them quickly in the instant pot.

Do you have any end of the year traditions? I’d love to hear them!
