What Herbs and Seasonings To Put On Avocado Toast

There are SO many options for seasoning avocado toast. You can go with a simple seasoning like just a little salt and pepper or try some of these other great ideas for your toast toppings.

  • Chives, parsley or other chopped fresh herbs like basil, marjoram, or lemon balm.
  • Cumin or coriander - both of these are great on avocado when used sparingly.
  • Garlic and onion powder.
  • Paprika.
  • Smoked paprika or chipotle seasoning - these will give a greater depth of smoky flavor.
  • Chili powder.
  • Smoked salt.
  • Seasoned salt - this is a blend of salt and various spices and is different from smoked salt.
  • Flaky sea salt and black pepper - because sometimes simple is best.
  • Sumac - this has a slight citrusy taste that is very pleasant on avocado. It’s a commonly used spice in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine.
  • Everything bagel seasoning.
  • Badia Sazon Completa (Complete Seasoning).

How To Spice Up Your Avocado Toast

If you like things a little on the spicier side, try some of these great options to heat things up a bit.

  • Cayenne pepper.
  • Cajun seasoning.
  • Crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Hot sauce - Use your favorite! I like Tabasco or Cholula.
  • Sriracha - the classic.
  • Harissa sauce - Harissa is a North African hot sauce made from roasted red peppers, chili peppers and various spices. It’s a great mix of heat and sweet.
  • Fresh or sauteed jalapenos or other hot peppers.
  • Tajin sauce - these bottled spice blends and sauces are similar to standard hot sauce but also has hints of lime and other seasonings.

Tips & Tricks

  • You can easily dice the avocado in the shell and use a spoon to scoop it into a bowl before mashing.
  • Keep the pit. If you are mashing the avocado a little in advance, immediately put it in an airtight container with the pit to keep it from oxidizing and turning brown.
  • You can also use an extra squeeze of lemon or lime juice to help prevent oxidation.
  • Avocados should be stored at room temperature. Only put them in the fridge if they are getting too ripe.

Is It Safe To Eat Unripe Avocado?

Yes, it is perfectly safe to eat an underripe avocado. However the flavor will be underwhelming and the texture will be firm. An unripe avocado will not have the same creamy, buttery texture we enjoy. It’s best to use a ripe and somewhat soft avocado for this recipe.

How To Ripen Avocado

To help speed along the ripening process you can put the avocado in a brown paper bag with a fruit that produces ethylene gas. Common fruits to use are bananas, apples, pears, cherries, citrus fruits, and kiwi.

What to Eat With Avocado Toast

Serve this avocado toast for breakfast or lunch on its own or as part of a light meal. Here are some ideas for great avocado toast accompaniments.

Breakfast

  • Eggs - fried, scrambled, poached, or boiled, eggs are a great companion to avo toast.
  • Oatmeal or yogurt.
  • Fresh fruit.

Lunch

  • Salad - serve it with a green salad or something like a cucumber tomato salad or pasta salad.
  • Make a sandwich with flavorful avocado spread instead of mayonnaise.
  • As the perfect side to tuna or chicken salad.
  • A great addition with soup, stew, or chili.

How to Store Leftover Avocado

Leftover mashed avocado should be refrigerated in an airtight container immediately. This will help avoid it turning brown due to oxidation.
